What Does AI SEO Actually Mean for Your Business?
AI SEO is the practice of optimizing your website for both traditional search results and AI-generated answers. That means showing up on Google, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.
The old SEO model was simple. Write content, target keywords, earn backlinks, rank on page one. That model still works, but AI SEO adds a second dimension that most businesses haven’t addressed yet.
Here’s how it works. AI platforms scan your website, grab the best bits, and serve them up as answers. Get cited? You win visibility without needing a #1 ranking. Get skipped? You’re invisible in a channel that grows every month.
We’ve seen this with our own clients at Boston Web Marketing. Businesses that rank well in traditional search are sometimes completely absent from AI-generated answers. On the other hand, sites with strong, clearly structured content get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity even when they’re not in Google’s top three.
There’s another piece people miss. Someone reads about your company in a ChatGPT response and forms an opinion before they ever land on your site. Your homepage used to be the first impression. Now it’s whatever the AI says about you.
So what’s actually driving this shift? It starts with AI Overviews.
How Are AI Overviews Reshaping Google Search?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results. They answer the query before users see any organic links. They’ve gone from experiment to default in under two years.
As of March 2026, AI Overviews appear in over 65% of personalized U.S. search results, according to Xponent21’s analysis. Even non-personalized queries trigger them nearly half the time.
That happened fast. AI Overviews barely existed in early 2024. By mid-2025, studies from Conductor and SE Ranking pegged them at roughly 25-30% of queries. Separately, Ahrefs found that AI Overviews cut click-through rates by 58% on affected queries.
Picture this. Someone types “how to choose an accountant” into Google. Instead of ten blue links, they get a two-paragraph AI answer pulled from multiple websites. If yours is one of those sources, you get a citation and a link. If not, you’re buried below the fold, and most people never scroll that far.
Which Industries Are Most Affected?
The industries hit hardest are the ones where Google’s AI feels confident answering: healthcare, education, home services, legal, and finance. So if you’re a small business in any of these, AI Overviews are already changing your traffic patterns.
But here’s the part that catches people off guard. AI Overviews don’t just pull from top-ranked pages. Instead, they pull from pages that answer the question clearly and directly. Because of this, a page ranking #7 with a well-structured answer can get cited over a page ranking #1.
We’ve tracked this across client sites for the past 12 months. Businesses with clearly structured FAQ pages and how-to content get cited in AI Overviews at higher rates than those with standard blog posts. For AI citations, structure beats ranking position.
Understanding AI Overviews is the first step in any AI SEO strategy. The next question is what happens to all the clicks they absorb.
Why Are Zero-Click Searches Growing and What Should You Do?
Zero-click searches happen when a user gets their answer directly on Google’s results page without clicking through to any website. As of mid-2025, they accounted for roughly 69% of all searches.
According to Similarweb’s research reported by Search Engine Roundtable, zero-click searches grew from 56% to 69% after Google launched AI Overviews. That’s a 13 percentage point jump in about one year.
That sounds alarming. And it should be.
But here’s the part most articles miss: the clicks that DO happen are more valuable now.
Think about it. Before AI Overviews, a user might click five results and bounce from four of them. Now they read the AI summary, get a basic answer, and only click when they need something deeper. Like hiring someone. Or buying something. Or comparing options.
So if your content earns that click, you’re getting a visitor who already knows what they want. These aren’t tire-kickers. They’re ready to act.
We’ve seen this in our analytics. One client’s organic traffic dropped 15% after AI Overviews expanded into their industry. But their lead form submissions went up 8%. Fewer visitors, better ones.
How Should You Track This Shift?
First, stop chasing raw traffic numbers. Instead, start measuring conversions, form fills, and phone calls. If your traffic dips but your leads hold steady, then AI search is actually working in your favor.
Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console both offer data points that help you track this shift. For example, look at your “engaged sessions” metric alongside organic traffic. If engaged sessions stay flat or rise while total sessions drop, that means your content is attracting higher-intent visitors.
You should also monitor which queries trigger AI Overviews for your industry. Google Search Console doesn’t break out AI Overview impressions separately. They’re lumped in with standard organic results. But you can still spot the pattern. If impressions hold steady while clicks drop for specific queries, AI Overviews are likely absorbing those clicks. Cross-reference by searching those queries yourself and noting which ones show an AI summary at the top.
This brings us to a new discipline that’s becoming central to any AI SEO strategy.
What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI platforms can extract and cite it. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews all pull from websites that format answers clearly.
Think of it as SEO’s newer sibling. While traditional SEO helps you rank in search results, AEO helps you get quoted in AI-generated answers. Same goal (visibility), different channel.
| Traditional SEO | Answer Engine Optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in search results | Get cited in AI-generated answers |
| Optimizes for | Keywords, backlinks, page speed | Clear answers, structured data, entity authority |
| Traffic source | Organic clicks from search results | AI citations plus organic clicks |
| Content format | Long-form, keyword-rich pages | Question-answer, self-contained paragraphs |
| Trust signals | Domain authority, backlink profile | Cross-web mentions, author credentials, reviews |
You don’t pick one over the other. You need both.
A page that ranks #3 on Google AND gets cited in ChatGPT’s response captures two streams of visibility from a single piece of content. Double the exposure for the same effort.
The businesses winning right now treat every page as a potential answer source. They write content that AI can easily extract, summarize, and attribute back to them.
We started building AEO into our client strategies in late 2024. Since then, the results have been clear. Pages optimized for both SEO and AEO consistently outperform pages optimized for just one. The data backs it up.
But what does AI SEO and AEO look like in practice? It comes down to six specific steps.
What Are the 6 Steps to Optimize for AI Search?
You don’t need a massive budget or a dedicated team to show up in AI search results. These six steps work for any small business. You can start today.
- Answer questions directly at the top of every page. AI pulls from content that gives clear, concise answers. Start each section with a direct response in 40 to 60 words. No buildup, no throat-clearing. Answer first, explain after. We restructured a client’s service pages this way, and their AI Overview citations doubled in eight weeks.
- Use a clear heading structure on every page. Your H2 tags handle main topics. H3 tags break those into subtopics. AI systems read this hierarchy like a table of contents, and pages with clean structure get cited more often than messy ones. We’ve tested this side by side. Same content, different formatting. The structured version wins every time.
- Build FAQ pages for your most common customer questions. Your sales team hears the same 10 to 15 questions every week. Turn those into FAQ content with Schema.org FAQPage markup. This markup signals to AI systems that your content is answer-formatted. It drives higher citation rates even without traditional FAQ rich results.
- Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile. Google Business Profile feeds directly into AI-generated local answers. If your hours are wrong or your services list is half empty, that’s what AI tells potential customers. Update everything. Respond to reviews, even the short ones. AI platforms treat review activity and recency as signs that a business is real and active.
- Get mentioned on other authoritative sites. AI platforms assess trust through cross-web mentions. Reviews on Google and industry directories matter. So do citations in local news or trade publications. These mentions build what’s called entity authority. It matters more for AI citations than traditional backlinks do.
- Add structured data to your website. Of all six steps, this one punches above its weight the most. We cover it in detail in the next section because the technical side matters.
Where Should You Start?
Start with steps 1 and 3 because they take the least time and deliver the biggest impact on AI visibility. In fact, we’ve seen citation rates double just from restructuring existing content into question-and-answer format. You don’t need new pages. Better structure on the pages you already have does the job.
What Role Does Structured Data Play in AI SEO?
OK, “structured data” sounds boring. We get it. But stick with us for a minute because this one changed the game for several of our clients. In plain English, it’s a chunk of Schema.org code that tells AI exactly what your page is, who wrote it, and what your business does.
Your website already talks to humans through design and words. Schema is how you talk to the machines. Skip it, and AI has to guess what you’re about. Add it, and you’re handing over a cheat sheet.
Here are the four schema types we set up for almost every small business client:
- LocalBusiness: Name, address, phone, hours, service area. Sounds basic. Yet most local businesses are still missing it.
- FAQPage: This turns your Q&A content into AI-ready snippets. Of everything on this list, we’ve seen FAQPage move the needle fastest.
- BlogPosting: Stamps each article with who wrote it, when, and what it covers. AI uses this for credibility checks.
- Person: Connects the author to a LinkedIn profile and real credentials. More on why this matters in a second.
Why Does Person Schema Matter So Much?
Because AI platforms weigh E-E-A-T signals heavily when deciding what to cite. Pages with clear author attribution, real credentials, and a connected LinkedIn profile show up in AI answers at much higher rates. It’s not the LinkedIn link alone doing the work. It’s the full picture of author credibility that Person schema helps AI systems verify.
Here’s a quick win we saw last quarter. We added the FAQ page and LocalBusiness schema to a home services client’s WordPress site. Six weeks later, their pages started showing up in AI Overviews for three keyword clusters they hadn’t even targeted. The schema told Google’s AI exactly what the content covered, and AI ran with it.
And no, you don’t need to touch code. WordPress users can set this up through Yoast SEO or RankMath in about 30 minutes. One catch, though. After setup, run your pages through Google’s Rich Results Test. We’ve actually seen broken schema confuse AI crawlers more than having no schema at all. That 5-minute check saves real headaches.
Structured data is the technical foundation of any AI SEO strategy. But for local businesses, there’s another layer worth understanding.
How Does AI Search Affect Local Businesses Differently?
Local businesses face a unique version of the AI search shift. When someone asks ChatGPT or Google “best plumber near me” or “marketing agency in [city],” the AI draws from different signals. Those signals differ from what AI uses for general informational queries.
For local results, AI platforms care about three things: your Google Business Profile data, how many reviews you have (and what they say), and whether your name pops up across the web. We’ve watched businesses with 200 reviews and a filled-out Profile get cited over competitors who have better websites but only 15 reviews. The AI doesn’t care about your design. It cares about your reputation.
This caught us off guard, honestly. Old-school local SEO was all about on-page work and backlinks. AI search flipped the script. What people say about you off-site now matters as much as what’s on your website.
We’ve tracked this pattern across dozens of local business clients. In short, the ones showing up in AI-generated local answers share three traits. They have complete, regularly updated Google Business Profiles. They actively generate and respond to reviews. And they get mentioned by name on local news sites, chamber of commerce pages, and industry directories.
What Should Local Businesses Do First?
Fair warning: this takes effort. Generating reviews and staying active in your community isn’t a one-and-done project. But the payoff is real. You’d be showing up in a channel your competitors haven’t even thought about yet. Right now, almost nobody in the local community is doing this work.
So where should you start? Pull up your Google Business Profile and audit it for completeness. Then search your business name and count how many directories list you. If it’s under 10, that’s a gap. Just those two fixes put you ahead of the pack. Seriously, we audit local businesses every week, and most haven’t touched this stuff.
One more tactic that’s worked well for our clients: build location-specific pages that answer common questions. Something like “How to Choose a [Service] in [City]” gives AI exactly the kind of localized, question-formatted content it loves to cite. We’ve published pages like this for clients and seen AI citations appear within weeks.
Now, for the questions we hear most from business owners about AI SEO.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI-generated content still rank on Google?
Short answer: yes. Google has said publicly that they don’t care how content is made. What they care about is whether it’s actually helpful. AI-generated articles that have been reviewed, fact-checked, and edited by someone with real expertise can rank well. But publishing raw AI output without human review is where businesses run into problems. The content needs a human’s judgment and quality check before it goes live.
How do I check if AI platforms are citing my business?
Search for your business name and key service terms on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google (look for AI Overviews at the top). Note where you show up and where you don’t. There’s no single dashboard for this yet. Monthly manual checks give you a clear picture. Tools like Semrush and Ahrefs are starting to add AI visibility tracking features.
Is traditional SEO dead?
Not even close. After all, Google still processes billions of searches every day, and organic rankings still drive the majority of website traffic. What’s changed, though, is that SEO alone isn’t enough anymore. Businesses need both traditional SEO and answer engine optimization working together. Think of it as adding a second lane to the highway, not replacing the first one.
How long does it take to see results from AI search optimization?
Most businesses see initial changes within four to eight weeks of implementing structured data and reformatting content for AI extraction. AI platforms re-crawl and re-index content on different schedules. Google AI Overviews may pick up changes within days, while ChatGPT and Perplexity can take longer. Consistency matters more than speed.
Do I need to hire an AI SEO specialist?
Not necessarily. The six steps in this guide are designed for any small business owner to follow. That said, businesses in competitive industries often benefit from working with a digital marketing agency that understands both traditional SEO and AI search optimization. The strategy side, especially entity authority building and schema implementation, can be technical.
