Peabody got its start as part of Danvers which actually was initially part of Salem. The town broke away and became South Danvers, later changing its name to Peabody after philanthropist, George Peabody. It was farmland for much of its early history and eventually became a major center for the Leather Industry. Many tanneries opened in the town and this helped give the town its “Tanner City” nickname and school mascot, the Tanners. Today, Peabody is home to 51,000 residents and many businesses. Peabody’s commercial districts include downtown, Centennial Industrial Park and the Northshore Mall.
