Google has now separated AI visibility from the rest of the data in Google Search Console. As of June 3rd, 2026, Google revealed dedicated Generative AI performance reports for both Search and Discover. The search report showcases impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, as well as URLs that appeared and metrics by country, device, and date. This addition is a significant milestone, as until now, website and business owners were unable to isolate pages that appeared in Google’s generative search. Google’s new update now provides that separation, but does not entirely complete a breakdown of AI search performance.
As of right now, this new update serves as an impression report that shows links to our content are appearing somewhere within Google’s features. Not to be confused, this update is helpful, but it does not inform us what Google did with the content, if anyone noticed the source, or whether your appearance accomplished anything out of the ordinary.
Understanding the Generative AI Report
The generative AI search report comprises impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Website and business owners can separate the data by:
- Page
- Country
- Device
- Date
The report currently does not include:
- Queries
- Clicks
- CTR (Click-Through-Rate)
- Average positioning
- Citation placement
- Coversion
- Revenue data
It is possible that some of these metrics may be included later on, but as of right now, Google has stated that they are still working with website owners to decide which metrics would be most beneficial. Additionally, Google is currently testing a separate Search Console function that allows site and business owners to include or exclude their content from AI Overviews, AI Mode, etc. If you didn’t know already, excluding a site prevents its links and content from appearing in those features without removing the site from ordinary searches.
Determining What Exactly Counts as an AI Impression
Defining what counts as an AI impression can be confusing. From Google’s perspective, an impression is defined as an instance where a link to a website is shown to a user within a generative AI platform or feature. And of course, the counting method changes with the level of aggregation. For example, if two URLs from the same website appear within one AI-generated response, that will count as one impression.
It is also important to keep in mind that AI impressions are not standard search impressions. Both of these metrics are considered impressions, but the user experiences are not considered equal. In traditional search, an impression is a discrete listing, whereas in AI Overviews, the product is an integrated answer.
