Automated vs. Manual Bidding For Google Local Services Ads

Google Local Services Ads are search engine advertisements that are designed for local businesses to use to get leads from customers in their target areas. Local Services Ads operate on a pay-per-lead basis, meaning that businesses only pay Google for leads that they actually receive in the form of phone calls or messages. When and where your Local Services Ads show up are determined by a few different factors, including your bid (the maximum amount you’re willing to pay for a lead). When other local businesses in your industry and area are bidding on the same leads, Google determines how much leads are worth based on these bids. There are three bidding strategies you can use for Local Services Ads: Automated Bidding (Maximize Leads), Automated Bidding (Target Cost Per Lead), and Manual Bidding (Max Per Lead). Below, we’ll break down the differences between these bidding strategies to help you determine which is right for your business’s Google Local Services Ads! Automated Bidding (Maximize Leads)

Automated Bidding (Maximize Leads) is the default bidding strategy that you will start out with when you create your Google Local Services Ads account. This strategy allows Google to set your bid at the amount that will get you the most leads possible based on the weekly budget you’ve chosen. For optimal results, Google recommends that you set your budget high enough to get you ten leads per week (at minimum).

Automated Bidding (Target Cost Per Lead)

Automated Bidding (Target Cost Per Lead) is a semi-automated smart bid strategy that is similar to the “Automated Bidding (Maximize Leads)” strategy mentioned above, with the only difference being that Google allows you to set a target cost-per-lead (tCPL). By setting a target cost-per-lead, you’ll be telling Google how much you want to pay for each lead on average. This allows Google to automatically adjust your bids to aim for that target.

Manual Bidding (Max Per Lead)

Manual Bidding (Max Per Lead) is a bidding strategy that allows you to set your own bid limit, which is the most you’re willing to pay for a lead. This max-per-lead bidding strategy ensures that you’ll never pay more than your set limit for a lead, even if your average lead price would align with your budget.
