Yahoo Announces End Of Yahoo BOSS

Back in July of 2008, Yahoo launched its own build- your-own-search service or Yahoo BOSS. This service enabled developers to access search results, combine them with other sources, re-rank them and define their appearance. Yahoo BOSS service included both API’s and developer tools as well as samples to use web interfaces to construct your own search service.

A few years after its launch, Yahoo’s BOSS was migrated off Yahoos search technology to Microsoft’s index, which introduced a fee structure for higher volume. And now nearly 8 years after its release Yahoos BOSS will be shutting down.

The service is set to officially close next month on March 31, 2016. Over the past year, Yahoo has been announced the end of many of its features including Yahoo Maps. Other services such as Yahoo TV, Yahoo Autos in UK, France, German, Spain and Italy have also shut down in 2015.

If you visit the Yahoo Boss API page you will find a note letting users know that Yahoo will be discontinuing the BOSS JSON search API next month and that customers leveraging the search API can instead use YPA, a Javascript Solution that provides algorithmic web results with search ads for publishers who manage their own search engine results pages.

Among  Yahoo closing yet another search service, they have recently made some noise with testing of videos in their search results. Although Yahoo has yet to comment, it will be interesting to see if Yahoo incorporated these videos in search results in the near future.
