According to a new study, Google Search click-through rates are down more than 68% this year. In a blog published on SparkToro, the audience research company found that new AI tools, UI features, and “instant” answers led to the decline. “This data likely comes as little surprise to anyone in the world of search — thousands of sites have reported significant losses in traffic, and millions have experienced it,” Fishkin wrote. “Large-scale studies have been performed to analyze the handful of sites who’ve grown traffic despite the last few years’ decline in referrals. Numerous stories of traffic falling off a cliff have gone viral.”

What is a Click-Through Rate and Why is it Important?
Your click-through rate is the percentage of users who clicked on your website after seeing your link on a search engine results page. This can be calculated by dividing the total number of clicks on your website during a certain timeframe by the total number of impressions you got during the same timeframe, then multiplying the result by 100. The higher your CTR is, the more traffic you’ll have, potentially leading to greater conversions. The lower your CTR is, the more you’ll be shouting into the void.
Why Does It Matter if Click-Through Rates are Down on Google?
Your website’s SEO traffic is bound to change. Whereas businesses could count on organic searches as one of their primary sources of traffic, this might not be the case anymore. Instead, as AI search engines take rise, and users are less likely to sift through search results for their target webpage, it might be a good idea to consider optimizing your pages for AI searches.
What Else Did the Study Reveal About Google’s Click-Through Rates?
Based on the data, for every 1,000 searches on Google, only 232 actually lead to clicks. To break down the numbers further, 66% of these searches visited a unique webpage, 27% went to a Alphabet or Google-owned property (AI Mode, YouTube), and 6% went to paid ads.
How Can You Improve Your Click-Through Rates on Google?
- Lead with engaging titles. Users are “window shopping” each webpage’s title when they browse search results, so write something that’ll catch their eye.
- Tailor your meta descriptions for your audience: Similar to catchy titles, you’ll need a good meta description if you want people to visit your website.
- Get better keywords: Learn your audience and know what they’re searching for. Use curated keywords to bring them to your website.
