Google has officially released the date that Universal Analytics will stop recording new data: July 1st, 2023. “Universal Analytics will no longer process new data in standard properties beginning July 1st, 2023. Prepare now by setting up and switching over to a Google Analytics 4 property.” So, what does this mean exactly? According to Google, you’ll be able to access old data on UA for at least six months after July 1st, 2023; it just won’t continue to record any new data. If you want to access this historical data after those six months have passed, you’ll need to export your Universal Analytics reports to a local file. The biggest takeaway from this announcement is that you should set up Google Analytics 4 as soon as possible if you haven’t already. In this article, we’ll break down the steps to quickly and easily set up GA4 in preparation for the phase-out of Universal Analytics.
Setting Up Google Analytics 4
With the date set for the end of Universal Analytics in the summer of 2023, it’s crucial to set up GA4 now to prevent year-over-year data losses. To start, make sure you have the correct permissions for both Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager. Once logged into your Universal Analytics property, click the “Admin” panel on the bottom left side of your screen. Next, look for the “GA4 Setup Assistant” button under the Property Settings column. This setup assistant should walk you through the first few steps of the process until you receive your Measurement ID, at which point it’s time to open Google Tag Manager. Once logged into GTM, create a new tag and name it “Google Analytics 4”. For the Tag Configuration, select “Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration”, then paste your Measurement ID in the given space. Next, choose “All Pages” as your trigger, then save your new tag. Finally, submit your new tag and note that you added Google Analytics 4. Now you’ve successfully set up GA4, and you’re ready for the Universal Analytics phase-out in July 2023!
