What to Consider When Choosing Categories in Google My Business

Google My Business is incredibly important for ranking your website or business on Google. It’s important that your Google My Business profile is as optimized as possible, and is being updated with reviews and posts regularly. A well-optimized Google My Business is key to seeing your business rank higher on Google. The three biggest factors that affect your ranking on Google My Business are business name, website, and categories.

Categories on Google My Business let Google know what kind of business you are. A dentist? A fitness gym? An Italian restaurant? This helps them to bring up accurate search results when people are searching for a specific service or business. You can choose up to 10 categories. The categories you choose also affects what features of Google My Business you are able to use, so it’s important to choose these categories wisely.

Evaluate Your Important Keywords

Make sure you have a good grasp on what your business is looking to be found for and have done keyword research. Include what kind of business you’re in, all of your goods and services, and type of business (such as Italian restaurant) to evaluate the strongest keywords. This will allow you to get as specific as possible with the categories and make sure that you are showing up for the correct search terms when people are looking for a business like yours.

There are also a number of category suggestion tools on the web that you can utilize to make sure there is no stone left unturned when it comes to potential category ideas and options. Even Google My Business itself may give you suggestions.

Evaluate Your Competitors’ Categories

You don’t want to be in a situation where your competitors are showing up ahead of you on Google because they included a business category that you didn’t. You should have a good idea of who your local competitors are first. If you are a small coffee shop, your competitors won’t be a pizza place or a coffee shop 2 hours away. The competitors you should evaluate are in the same type of business as you and are located in the same target area that your customers are coming from. Then, evaluate what categories they are listed as, and make sure yours are similar, and possibly even better. You don’t need to have identical categories, but it’s a good idea to make sure you aren’t missing something that can end up being an important ranking factor.

Choose Only Relevant Categories

Ensure that the categories that you do end up selecting are only ones that are relevant to your business. You are allowed to select up to ten categories, but that does not mean you need to. It can actually be detrimental to include categories that aren’t relevant just to increase the number of them. It is all about quality over quantity!
