When it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the number one question that people have is, “How long will it take me to rank on the first page of Google?” and to be honest, I understand why customers ask that question. Speed is more important than ever when it comes to technology and being able to be found as quick and easy as possible is what a lot of companies strive for. The problem here is many misinterpret what the main goal of SEO is. Let’s take a closer look at what the main goal is and how you can achieve it.
The Main Goal of SEO
SEO is all about conversions. The goal is to turn impressions on your website and social media platforms into calls and contact form submissions and eventually into sales. Don’t get me wrong, rankings on Google are certainly important but they don’t mean anything if they aren’t leading to sales.
What You Need to Know to Rank on Page 1
Now that we’ve established what the main point of SEO is, it’s important to understand the correlation to ranking well in Google Searches. There is no set-in-stone answer on how to rank well but there are certain things that you should take into consideration:
Your type of site: How new or old your site is can have a major impact on your ranking. A more established site that has plenty of pages already being crawled by Google will rank better than a new website. Note: If you have an older website that was made in HTML or have bad hosting, this could affect your ranking since Google uses page speed as a factor for ranking
Keyword competition: The industry you are in and the keywords you are trying to rank for are important. Carefully selecting your keywords can make all the difference in ranking on page one versus five. For example, if you are in the healthcare industry, don’t expect to magically appear at the top of rankings for the keyword “healthcare” since there hundreds of thousands of searches that include it.
Popularity: If your company is a household name in your industry, you most likely are already ranking well without knowing it based on the popularity of your brand. If you are a new company that is trying to make a name for itself, it will be harder to rank well since people don’t know the name.
Ranking well in Google searches is not a simple walk in the park. Every company should take its own unique approach to it. What worked for one company may not work for another based on a variety of different factors. The idea is to use SEO to rank well for what you believe will drive the most sales.
