Importance of Titles and Meta Descriptions
We know how important it is to have content rich, grammatically correct pages with appropriate keyword placement right? What about the description of that page though? What will users see if they see that page on a SERP? This is where the importance of page titles and meta descriptions comes into play.
What are Page Titles and Meta Descriptions?
Page titles or title tags are the actual titles of the document or page. Now, title tags will not show up on the page itself, or in the URL, but they will show up on search engine result pages (SERPs) above the URL, as well as at the top of the browser if hovering above the tab of the page. Page titles should be no more than 60 characters and should provide a clear and concise overview of the page while including relevant and important keywords. Title tags should be followed by a brand or site name after the short description separated by a pipe.
Meta descriptions also will appear in the SERPs, under the title tag and URL. The meta description, similar to the title tag, is a brief description of the information within the specific web page. Meta descriptions can be longer than title tags but should be no more than 160 characters. Meta descriptions allow for a personalized summary of the web page that includes accurate keywords and accurate information that users can expect to find when clicking through to your site. If you don’t create a meta description unique to a specific page, search engines will pull a snippet of text from the text body of the page which may not be as accurate or keyword rich as your own description.
Titles and descriptions allow for unique text for each specific webpage, site owners can target specific keywords and queries through titles and descriptions, and coherent descriptions can improve organic search rankings as well. Additionally, compelling title and description text can improve the quality of your click-through rate by enticing users to visit your web page. Descriptions can also include calls to action like “call us today for more information” or “call for a free estimate”, adding even more click-through incentives for users!
