For the first time in 25 years, Google is changing its Search box. Earlier this week, the Silicon Valley-based company announced major upgrades to its box, including new AI tools. “Starting today, we’re upgrading Search with Gemini 3.5 Flash — our newest Flash model delivering sustained frontier performance for agents and coding — as the new default model in AI Mode for everyone globally,” the company wrote on its online publication, “The Keyword.”
In our latest blog, we took a look at the new Search box features and what they’ll mean for your website. Read more below!
What’s The Biggest Change to Google’s Search Box?
As reported by the New York Times, the search box is getting bigger, and more AI-friendlier. As part of the update, Google has tailored its engine to understand more conversational prompts for searches that don’t “always fit into keywords.” “It’s more intuitive than ever, dynamically expanding to give you space to describe exactly what you need,” Google wrote on its website. “Designed to anticipate your intent, it also helps you formulate your question with AI-powered suggestions that go beyond autocomplete.” One major update? Users are now able to upload photos or videos into their search query.
What Else Did Google Introduce with Its New Update?
Search agents: Available 24/7, these digital agents––users can have as many as they want–– can act as a research assistant that “monitor for changes related to your specific question.” For instance, if a user is apartment shopping, the search agent can notify users of new listings without requiring them to be on Zillow.
Gemini 3.5 Flash: The new AI model is able to create improved software code and perform autonomous tasks. It also runs faster.
Expanded Personal Intelligence: Users can now link apps across Google platforms, such as Gmail and Google Photos, to improve search queries. Suppose you have a tight layover but want to grab a quick bite to eat. Google’s Personal Intelligence feature can provide a list of restaurants with your favorite foods, along with how far each restaurant is from your gate.
What Does The New Update Mean for Your Website?
With Google’s Search box changing, this means more users will be able to look for conversational queries instead of traditional keywords. This could significantly change your website’s search traffic for better or worse.
