On Monday August 13, 2012 Google announced on the official Google+ Page that they are starting to roll out custom URLs to a select few Google+ Profiles and Pages. Previously the URL was a string of 20 numbers.
Besides making further strides to attempt to compete with Facebook, this change is important for 2 additional reasons
- Google’s algorithms sometimes recognize URL optimization as a positive ranking signal and a vanity URL may help to rank your Google plus page better in search results (even when you are not signed into your Google account).
- Ease of use – Ability to use this URL on additional forms of advertising such as display advertising on YouTube or TV commercials.
The new vanity URL is live for some verified Google+ profiles but it is not ready to provide the feature to normal users. To get ahead of the game you can verify your Google+ business page which is now being combined with your original Google places page.
