This has been a big couple of weeks for webmaster tools, as both Google & Bing unveiled major updates with a ton of new features for optimizers to take advantage of. The two webmaster tools are a couple of the most important tools available to optimizers for understanding how traffic is visiting your website, the impressions you’re getting for particular queries, and any issues with your site’s pages, among other features.
With both tools rolling out new features, we wanted to provide you with a brief recap of the updates, and inform you about which tools you should consider using in the future!
Google Search Console
Let’s begin with GSC. Google announced this week that they were rolling out major updates to help site owners better understand what may be preventing your content from being crawled and indexed on your coverage report. The idea is that with more detailed information, it will be easier for optimizers to adjust their content and make the necessary adjustments. GSC’s coverage report is designed to provide optimizers with indexing information about all of your site’s URL’s and these updates make it a bit easier to understand exactly what’s going on.
First off, pages that have been submitted to GSC but are blocked by robots.txt but were still indexed are now notated as “indexed but blocked” rather than “submitted but blocked” to help explain the issue more clearly.
Another notable update was the “indexed without content” warning which provides the information in it’s namesake.
Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmasters Tools update was less about adding new features to the system and more about making the data more visible for users. While Bing has always tracked crawl & indexing data in other areas of the console, but they decided to add them to the search performance report graph.
Bing Webmasters chose to add crawl requests, crawl errors, and indexed pages to the search performance report so you can see how all three metrics changed over time relative to your clicks, impressions, average CTR, and average position on the SERP’s. While all this data was available before, having it all in one place makes it even easier to see the effect that cleaning up your site errors can have on your site’s performance overall!
