Instagram is now the fastest growing social media platform. Instagram Stories are now more than twice as popular as Snapchat, with the company announcing last Thursday that more than 400 million people use the feature each day, up from 250 million one year ago. Snapchat, by comparison, saw a mere 191 million active users in the last quarter. Overall, Instagram has 1 billion monthly active users.

When Instagram launched their Stories feature in 2016, many saw it as a blatant rip-off of Snapchat. In addition to sharing photos and videos to their followers that disappear after 24 hours, Instagram Stories also allowed users to use Snapchat-like filters that add things like flower crowns and puppy ears to people’s faces.Within eight months, Instagram Stories surpassed Snapchat‘s daily active user count.
Innovate and Expand
Instagram continues to add features, such as the ability to add GIFs and mention friends in posts. Snapchat was not far behind with adding these features as well, but it is clear that they are no longer the innovator in the relationship. Instagram announced another feature on Thursday: the ability to add music to photos or videos on Instagram Stories.
This announcement comes a mere 10 days after Instagram unveiled IGTV, a hub for long-form, vertical video. Anyone can post to IGTV, but they are currently limited to 10-minute videos. The rules are a bit more lack for users with 10,000 or more followers – they are allowed to share videos as long as an hour.
