One the most important techniques in improving your company’s SEO is to claim your Google places listing. To claim your listing navigate to: http://www.google.com/local/add and search for your phone number. Once you have claimed your company’s Google places listing, there are several techniques you can use that may help your listing appear more prominently in search results.
Make sure your listing is complete – There are many fields you can fill in when creating your Google places page. Be sure to include all relevant information and be as complete as possible. This includes hours, website, service area, payment options, etc.
Use relevant categories – When choosing categories for your business listing make sure you choose categories that most closely match what you do. You are allowed to choose five categories and I recommend using all 5. If you cannot find enough preset categories that Google has listed, fill in your own custom category. Google only requires that one category is from their preset list.
Include keywords in your description – In the description for your business clearly describe who you are and what you do and make sure you include keywords that you want to be found for in the description
Add your company to listing sites that include your address and information – Link building is one of the many factors in SEO and adding these links to sites such as yellow pages may also help improve your Google places ranking.
Encourage customers to rate and review your business on Google. Google may also use the number of reviews your business receives and number of stars (rating) you receive to place your listing
Improve your listing with Photos, Videos and additional details – Dress up your listing with photos and videos to make it more visually appealing. When editing your page, at the bottom there is room for additional details. Provide customers with any additional details about your business that you would like them to know.
