This past month, Facebook has been rolling out its latest feature, the ability to find free wi-fi hotspots nearby.
The new “Find Wi-Fi” feature is available on the mobile Facebook app, but currently only for iOS. It can be accessed through the options menu within the app. To enable it click on “Find Wi-Fi” and the app will prompt you to enable location services to “always”, if you do not have it set already. Click on “settings”, and you will be taken to your phones’ settings. Scroll down and tap on the Facebook App, then “Settings”-> “Location” -> “Always”. You will now be able to see all the hotspots on a map with a description of the business, a link to their Facebook page, and directions to the business.
Initially, this project started with “Wi-Fi for check-ins”, where business owners could offer up free wi-fi in exchange for a “check-in” on their Facebook page. The reason for doing this is very simple. People who need wireless internet will visit the business, and be tempted to spend money there.
With Facebook promoting its Live Video feature, users will be spending more of their data on the go. The Find Wi-Fi feature makes sure that users can stay connected when not at home, and gives them more reason to use Live Video.
