The photo-sharing giant Instagram seems to be making its way into the e-commerce market by creating an app of their own that will enable users to browse and purchase products directly from merchants. While this is exciting news, to say the least, it isn’t the first time that Instagram has hinted that they are making a push to dive deeper into the e-commerce world. The features that have been added to Instagram that have been pointing to e-commerce include:
- Opening up shoppable organic posts to apparel, jewelry, and beauty brands.
- Adding a shopping bag icon to a select number of retailers to add an e-commerce element to their Instagram stories.
- Expanding their collection ads and shopping bag icon for stories of all brands.
- Offering booking and payment features in May allows users to schedule salon appointments and purchase movie tickets through a business Instagram account.
With many brands seeing value from their Instagram audience, it won’t be hard for Instagram to push for retailers and brands to sign into a separate stand-alone app. Instagram reported last November that over 25 million marketers switched their accounts from regular to business profiles and they reached the one billion monthly active users mark in June.
With many retailers and brands already pushing products on their Instagram accounts, it is only smart to offer a stand-alone app that will allow for a more direct e-commerce line to their Instagram following.
