Meta, a company whose goal is to “help bring the metaverse to life”, announced that they would be changing the way advertisements work in 2022. On January 19th, they will implement the removal of Facebook Ads audience targeting options across four categories. Personalized Facebook advertisements allowed for a better user experience for most, although some felt this was an invasion of privacy or insensitive to associate them with their affiliations. Continue reading to learn more about how this implementation may affect your personal experience.
What Type of Ads Will Be Removed?
Facebook is going to be removing four of its advertisement categories. This is based on the user’s adverse reactions to personalized ads in these fields. The following areas that will be removed are:
- Health causes, such as cancer awareness or mental illnesses
- Political beliefs, social issues, causes, and organizations
- Religious practices and groups
- Sexual orientation
Although these ads may create a personalized user experience for some, many felt this was a breach of their privacy. This has damaged Facebook’s reputation with its users. To keep content relative to users’ following & friends on Facebook, Meta is moving forward with this implementation.
How Will This Affect Other Social Media Platforms?
It will be interesting to see if other social media platforms will follow suit and adjust their targeting capabilities. Meta has experienced significantly more pressure than other social media platforms to implement changes. Other social platforms risk drawing the same scrutiny as Facebook. Still, none of them have had a significantly large enough complaint to make adjustments that only Facebook is taking the heat. Since Facebook is the parent app of Instagram, Whatsapp, and Messenger, which are all under the ownership of Meta, it will be interesting to see how advertisements will change in the upcoming year.
