Simple “How To” For Keyword Research

Keyword research is one of the most important and valuable components of SEO and online marketing. Ranking for the right keywords can make or break your website. So how do we know which keywords we should focus on? We perform keyword research. Keyword research is finding out the actual terms that people enter into search engines. This can be done by starting with very broad keywords, and then going deeper into detail.

Make a list of important, relevant topics based on your business – These topics should be based on the services or products that your business provides. Say, if you’re a mold company, you may want to rank for the topic of mold removal.

Make a list of keywords based off of each of these topics – By taking the topics you came up with, you can now break these down into keywords for each topic. Mold removal can further be broken down into mold remediation, mold inspection, mold testing and black mold removal.

Make a list of long-tail keywords based off of our topics and keywordsLong-tail keywords are in-depth, multi-word phrases. This is when you’ll go a little deeper into the wording of the topics that your company covers. These can be worded as phrases or even questions such as, “What is black mold?”, “How can I prevent mold from growing after a flood?” “How to tell if you have mold growing in your home”.

Research related search terms – A very easy way to come up with more keywords is to use Google’s suggestions. Search for one of your keywords on Google, then scroll down to the bottom where it say’s “Searches related to “keyword””, and there will be a list of suggestions related to your search.
