How Much Will Google’s Mobile-friendly Update Effect My Traffic?

By now everybody knows that they should already have a mobile-friendly site or at least be working to get there. April 21st is the date that the mobile-friendly updates begin to hit – it could roll out over a week or more according to Google – but it’s definitely coming.

The question a lot of people are asking is how much this update will effect their website traffic and while it will vary from site to site, there are a couple of things to look at to give you an idea of what may happen.

First, comScore just released some statistics showing that 29% of search queries are mobile from smart phones or tablets. That’s a decent percentage.  Now if you have Google Analytics installed on your site, take a look at those numbers.  Check to see how many visits came from mobile sources versus your overall visits to get an idea of how much of your search traffic is mobile.  If your site is not mobile-friendly (you can check that here), you probably want to get to work.  Even if your mobile visit traffic is much smaller than regular visits, remember that more and more people continue to get smart phones and tablets, so those numbers are bound to increase.
