They say a picture is worth one-thousand words. When it comes to your website, you don’t just want your customers to read about your work, but also see with their very own eyes the hard work you have put in to build your business. Although images may be an afterthought when it comes to SEO, there are plenty of things that can be done to optimize them including URL optimization.
Changing Image URLs
URL optimization is one of the less common optimization routes that people tend to forget about when it comes to images. When you put a picture on your website, it gets its own URL just like any other web page. One of the main reasons for this is for Google image searches. Google’s John Mueller believes that site owners and SEO companies need to be wary of changing image URLs because it will affect how they rank. This, in particular, is important to companies that have a lot of images on their website and rely on Google image searches for traffic.
If an image URL is changed, Google will treat it as a new photo and have it re-crawled and re-indexed, making it work its way back to its former ranking. To make matters worse, the traffic that Google image searches get versus normal Google searches is far less so your image could take even longer than normal to obtain a high rank.
How To Deal With Changing Image URLs
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Although it may sound corny, it relates directly to how you should handle changing your image URLs. If possible, the best solution is to avoid changing them altogether, but if it must be done, the next course of action is to set up URL redirects. Redirects are a great alternative and necessity for maintaining the ranking and SEO of your pictures. The redirects will tell Google that the old URLs are related to the new ones and all traffic should be forwarded. Again, this is imperative for companies that consistently get traffic from Google images as you can lose a significant amount of traffic if your image optimization is not properly handled.
