How Do I Know if my Links are High Quality?

There are a few essential aspects of SEO to consider when creating content. High-quality links are extremely important for any website to improve their rankings on Google. They show Google the relevance between each page and how all of your content connects. Every website needs to have them, but if you do not have relevant and high-quality links, your site will be penalized. Read more to help determine if your links are helping or hurting your site.

Add Relevant Links

Determine whether or not the link is relevant to your topic. This may seem like a no brainer, but Google determines relationships between content by going to each link on a page, so it’s important to make them connected. Links that aren’t relevant do not show any value. For example, if you have a page that is all about training Golden Retrievers, you do not want to have a link to brands of cat food – that is not relevant.

Promote Engagement

The purpose of a link is to have someone click on it. If a source is relevant, you will want to make it enticing enough to promote engagement. Adding a link toward the top of the page is one way to encourage engagement. Additionally, add some context behind the link. Instead of just adding it to the anchor text, provide some background on the link and how it may help the reader. If they like what they see and want to learn more, they will click the link and provide more value to your site.

Have Unique Anchor Text

After adding context behind the link, it’s time to determine where to add it. Instead of adding the link to a word-for-word anchor text, add it to the natural flow of the text. This will keep the text from being overly repetitive with multiple links and can also eliminate over-optimization. It is possible to go too far and have too many best practices at once. For example, having too many keywords on one page or using the same anchor text for multiple links throughout the page is seen as over-optimization.

Don’t Overdo It

While it’s clear that links are important to any site, too many links may hurt you. When writing a blog, do not add a link to every single paragraph. The best rule of thumb is to add three to five every 1000 words. There is no specific amount of links that are good or bad for websites – it depends on your content. If you have a site that has a lot to say, the more, the merrier as long as the content is not thin. Every page should have value and should not be created just to have.
