In order to ensure that your website is properly optimized for all the major search engines, you will need to install Bing webmaster tools onto your website. This will allow you to submit your xml sitemap to be read by Bing and Yahoo search engines.
To install Bing webmaster tools go to bing.com/webmaster. If you do not already have a Microsoft account you will need to make one, then log in to view your webmaster tools dashboard. At the top of the dashboard under “My Sites” there is an option to add a website. Enter the URL of the website you would like to install Bing webmaster tools on.
You will be taken to a new page where you enter your xml sitemap’s URL. (www.yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml). Enter the Sitemap URL and click “ADD”
You need to verify ownership for your website. There are three options for verification.
The first is to add an XML file to your web server. To do this download the XML file and upload it to your roof folder via FTP. Once the file has been uploaded, go to https://www.example.com/BingSiteAuth.xml to test that the file is working. If it was successful, click “Verify” at the bottom of the page.
The second option is to add a <meta> tag containing the authentication code in the header of your website.
This can be done by opening the index file of your website in an HTML editor, then copy and paste the code provided into the <head> section of the file. Save the file, then click “Verify” at the bottom of the page.
The third option is to add a CNAME record to the DNS
Adding a CNAME record is different for every DNS provider. Bing provides an option to select your DNS server and then searches for instructions on how to add the CNAME record. Choose your DNS provider and follow the instructions. Once you have added the CNAME, click “Verify” at the bottom of the page.
Once you click Verify at the bottom of the page, you will be notified whether or not it was verified successfully. Once verified, it will take a few days for Bing to start reading the xml sitemap and indexing your website.
