FTP accounts are useful for uploading files and images, editing html & putting 301 redirects on your site. There are a lot of things you can do with through FTP but first, you will need an account to get started! We’ll show you how to create an FTP account.
The first thing you will need is full hosting access to your cPanel. Every hosting company’s cPanel will look different but they will all have this option available, whether its GoDaddy, Fatcow, Network Solutions, Host Gator or Westhost, it doesn’t matter. They will all have an option for you to create an FTP account.
After you get the log in credentials to your cPanel/hosting account, log in and pull up the cPanel. Look for an icon similar to the one below:
Click on FTP accounts and it will give you an option to create a new user.
Pick a unique username and password. Make sure you don’t forget it!
The last step is to pick which Directory you want the FTP account to have access to. Using “/public_html/” should give you access to all the files on your hosting account.
That’s it! You’re done! Now you can access your files through any FTP client. I recommend Fire FTP, an add-on through Mozilla Firefox.
