Google is the name that immediately pops into our heads when we hear the term “search engine.” It can be our go-to source for looking up anything from how to tie a bow to where the best gelato is in the North End. What if, though, this search engine became one that was used not only for content, but one you could personalize and create connections with other people through?
Google’s “Search, plus Your World” is the latest update to our favorite search engine, and it is one that many think could be highly impactful. Google has explained that this addition developed from the implementation of Social Search, but they have added 3 new features:
- Personal Results, which enable you to find information just for you, such as Google+ photos and posts
- Profiles in Search enable you to immediately find people you’re close to or might be interested in following; and,
- People and Pages, which help you find people profiles and Google+ pages related to a specific topic or area of interest, and enable you to follow them with just a few clicks.– Google Blog
In the social media world, we have recently seen a large increase in the popularity of Google+. More and more people are climbing aboard and creating Google+ profiles, and this new “plus Your World” feature is one that makes joining even more appealing. Google has created the ability to see both content shared with you privately with related content from the public web. Creating a Google+ account, especially as a business owner, is beneficial because it allows you to form numerous connections- a key goal of social media optimization. For example, perhaps someone from Florida wants to take a trip to Boston: they might go into Google and search “trips to Boston,” and find that one of their friends in their Google+ circle has recently traveled there, sharing pictures, news and even a link to their favorite little café. Amazingly, this café happens to be yours, and now everyone else in that social circle has the opportunity to see your link as well.
Basically, Google “Search, plus Your World” takes these connections, as well as any of your online searches and puts them all into one, new system so that the user does not have to search something twice. This is something that many could find appealing, and it could cause a much greater increase in Google+ profiles. The more people that join, the more opportunities you have to connect with them, which in turn could cause others who are connected to those people to find interest in you as well. It is a chain that can continue to grow outward, and if you are a business owner focusing on your social media exposure, this new addition could be one to take advantage of.
