As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, your Google My Business account has become more and more of a critical resource for your company, allowing you to post regular and COVID-19 related updates including operational changes and different hours. Google recently rolled out a change that posts a notification within your listing in search results as to how long ago the listing was updated by someone with owner or managerial access. This new feature has been available on listings and within the Knowledge Panel for about two weeks and automatically updates with any edits you may make.
What does this mean for my business?
With the constant opening and closing and updating hours since the pandemic began this spring, customers may not know if your business is available for shopping or services. Going back and forth between phased reopenings can also lead to confusion. By automatically updating listings with the last time of update, customers can know if they are looking at the latest information available and if they are able to visit your location or contact about potential services. This is one of several updates rolled out by Google in recent months to help businesses survive this uncertain time.
What can I do to keep my Google My Business listing updated?
Google My Business is often a potential customer’s first exposure to your business, appearing next to search results for queries relating to your business, product or service lines. It is also easy to update!
- Make sure you have claimed and are in control of your business listing. If you do not claim it, someone else will be able to make updates and could list inaccurate information that can dissuade customers from contacting you, including an incorrect phone number, hours or even website.
- Update your hours when they change, including closures for holidays or employee training.
- Utilize Google Posts to send out updates and information right from your listing. You can use Posts to advertise events, COVID-19 specific updates, and even just regular posts advertising your services.
Should I be utilizing this feature on other listing sites or social networks?
Yelp is also featuring the last update time on listings, allowing users to see the most recent information. Like your Google listing, make sure your Yelp page is claimed and updated with the correct information.
