Google Maps View Now Highlights COVID-19 Hotspots

Google is releasing a new Google Maps views that allow users to view COVID-19 hotspots in the area. Research assistance from Johns Hopkins University, the New York Times, Wikipedia, and other authoritative sources allowed the Google Maps team to highlight emerging and nearby COVID-19 outbreaks.

Sujoy Banerjee, a Product Manager for Google Maps, explains that the new feature is available on mobile views through the app as well as on desktop views.

When you open Google Maps, tap on the layers button on the top right hand corner of your screen and click on “COVID-19 info”. You’ll then see a seven-day average of new COVID cases per 100,000 people for the area of the map you’re looking at, and a label that indicates whether the cases are trending up or down. Color coding also helps you easily distinguish the density of new cases in an area.

Banerjee stated that the new feature is intended for users to identify the safest spots to travel, get goods and services, and stay safe. The feature rolled out last week and is available in 220 countries.

What does COVID-19 maps mean for my search engine marketing?

Google has already released major updates to help businesses digitally market their business during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, businesses can use their Google My Business listing to offer deliveries and safer ways to access goods and services. Local SEO updates allow businesses to provide new policies and information about their business and ensure that others can easily access their business.

The new COVID-19 maps on Google Maps view can help users find services that are still open in hotspots and safely navigate to businesses. A business that operates may be impacted if their region is a hotspot for the coronavirus. But Google allows businesses to offer new delivery and purchasing options to minimize infection risk.

As discussed in a previous Boston Web Marketing blog, digital marketing is going to be key in response to the coronavirus for small and larger businesses. The ability to rank for keywords, display new open hours, and compete in a more challenging economic environment can be addressed through new digital marketing programs.
