On September 7th, 2011 at the Facebook developer summit, Mark Zuckerberg introduced a new type of profile view called “Timeline.” Instead of a profile and wall, it’s a more controlled view of your online world. It gives you an easier way to view past events, older photos, trips around the world, using chronological and geographical navigation. It literally is the story of your life (or since you’ve joined Facebook).
Timeline blurs the current dividing lines in your profile and mixes the content from your information section, including your “Likes” and music taste, with the links and statuses posted onto your wall. One of the best features of Timeline is that is makes it far more easy to pull up pictures and status’s from years ago. Whether you are trying to find important information from years past or just goofing around with your buddies, trying to find old photos, this feature is extremely convenient and fun.
Today, Facebook released Timeline to some test markets, like New Zealand, to see how the new product works out. This is an encouraging sign because this is way ahead of the schedule that Facebook announced back on September 7th. Many people questioned “Why New Zealand first?” Facebook responded “because it’s English speaking, so we can read the feedback and make improvements quickly.”
Facebook has yet to release this wonderful new product in the United States, only leaving us with the vague answer of “In the near future”. One thing is for sure, when Timeline hits the American public, it will cause quite a stir in the Social Media world.
Timeline for Business Pages has not officially been announced by Facebook, but it seems pretty inevitable that Timeline will soon be used for Business Pages. This will allow Business to tell their whole story of how they got to where they are today, meanwhile, being able to highlight the web assets that the business deems important.
