Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a lot more complex than just submitting your website to a search engine, like Google, and then watching your Search Engine Results Page (SERP’s) climb the rankings. There are many important steps to launching a successful SEO campaign; however, I would like to focus on the importance of a website when trying to get your company found.
One of the most common misconceptions about a website is that actual design and layout is not important. It is! A good layout not only improves the readership of your website, but it also can help improve the way search engines crawl your site. Before submitting your website to search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo, here are a few things to think about:
Search engines are not able to crawl through animations and flashing graphics! They are only able to read text. If your website contains a slideshow or flashing graphics as the majority of the home page, this can drastically hurt the way that search engines rank your page. The saying “Content is King” has never been as important as it is today in the SEO world. With the release of Google Panda updates, unique and fresh content is that best way to increase your search results. It is more than okay to have some aesthetically pleasing photos on your website, just don’t skimp out on the content. Load your homepage with a lot of good information for search engines to read, and make sure it is unique!
Another problem with flashing graphics is that some of your website visitors may not have as fast of a modem, or connection, as you do. If a visitor is using a slow modem and your website contains large images that animated or flashing, this will cause your website to load very slowly. If a page is taking a long time to load, most people will click the “back” button before your website even loads. This is lost traffic and maybe even a lost customer due to flashing images. Avoid overdoing your site with large flashing images and just stick to a few basic photos.
Color scheme is also important. You want to make sure that your color choices contrast enough so that you site is easy on the viewer’s eyes. If you site is hard to read, it is likely that the visitor will leave the site and look for a different site that is easier to read. This is a terrible way to lose business since it is so simple to fix. Also avoid using crazy and obscure font styles. They can be okay for titles or headlines, but avoid using a crazy font style for the bulk text of the website. Some fonts can be very hard on the eyes when trying to read full paragraphs. Also, if you choice an obscure font, some web browsers may not even have that font available so viewer won’t be able to see anything. Don’t lose out on business from simple mistakes like these.
Finally, put forth the extra effort, or money, to get an onsite blog! Blogging is a great way to get your website found on search engines. Blogging create fresh new content while also adding new pages to your website and it hardly takes any time to write a new blog. Always keep in mind “Content is King”! These are words to live by in today’s SEO world.
