If you didn’t already know, meta keywords have been made redundant for quite some time now however, we still see site owners using meta keywords on their website. We decided to write about the uselessness of meta keywords it is for SEO.
What are Meta Keywords?
Meta Keywords are a specific type of meta tag that appears in the HTML code of a webpage, there were invisible to visitors but visible to search engines. The incorporated keywords you add into the HTML code would be used as a ranking factor by the search engines. You’re probably thinking, wouldn’t this be easy for Google to rank you? Then, yes, you are right. In fact, it was too easy that people started spamming this keyword element that Google decided to put a stop to meta keyword in September 2009.
Do Yahoo! and Bing use Meta Keywords?
The answer is no, they do not. Yahoo! made an announcement the same year as Google that they no longer use meta keywords tag anymore.
Bing followed as well but a little later, stating in 2014:
“Today, it’s pretty clear the meta keyword tag is dead in terms of SEO value. Sure, it might have value for contextual ad systems or serve as a signal to bots plying the web looking for topics to target, but as far as search goes, that tag flat lined years ago as a booster.”
In conclusion, do not waste any more of your time on meta keywords tag but instead, start looking into keyword research and focus on the keywords because meta keywords tag is dead.
