What’s the Difference Between Web Hosting and a Domain Name?

When setting up a website, it’s easy to get confused with all of the computer jargon. There’s search engines, URL’s, content management systems, web pages, and of course, the two that many people get confused, domain names and web hosting.

Web Hosting

Web hosting is a server that posts your website on the internet. In order for your website to show up on the internet, it MUST be on a hosting company. Hosting companies provide space on a server and internet connectivity, and cost around $100 a month.

Domain Name

A domain name is the name or URL address of a website. It points to your web server where all of your files are located. A domain name can be purchased on a domain name registrar and typically costs around $10-$15 per year, depending on the extension. You can choose your domain name based on your company or the products and services you offer. While domain names do not have to be purchased from the same company as the web hosting, it does make things a little easier to set up.
