Can Google Image Search Help Your Website’s Click-Through Rate?

This month, Google released its latest update to its Search Console Performance Report: multimodal search tracking. The new feature allows users to measure search results where an image was used as part of the search. This includes browsing on Google Lens, Google Images, Circle to Search, and Chrome’s “Search this Image” option. “We believe this new data will help you better understand your site’s performance in the modern search landscape and optimize your visual content,” Google wrote in its press release.

In our new blog, we took a look at how image-based searches can help significantly improve your traffic, from click-through rates to conversions. Read more below!

How Can Image-Based Searches Improve Your Website’s CTR?

In 2021, Google published a case study on Google Images and click-through rates. After including a unique meta tag to their images, which allowed Google to feature them in a larger format, some users experienced drastic increases in their CTR. Kirbie’s Cravings, a personal food blog, experienced a 79% increase in its CTR while Istoe, a Brazilian magazine, increased its CTR by 332% over six months. More than five years later, image-based searches are increasingly on the rise. In a Think with Google article, the company announced “Lens grew 65% year over year with more than 100 billion visual Searches already this year. And 1 in every 5 Lens searches shows commercial intent.”

What Should I Do to Improve My Website’s CTR Using Images?

  • Take original, high-quality images: In an era of AI-generated photographs, users are eager for the “real deal.” Make sure your images are captivating enough for a user to want to click on them.
  • Include targeted keywords in the photo’s file name: Be sure to also include keywords in your photo’s alt text.
  • Use the meta tag: By using the tag, you’ll have a better chance of being featured on Google Discover.
  • If you’re using Search Ads, “beef” up your campaign with curated media: Use Images Assets to take your Search Ads further. According to the company, “using images can potentially increase click-through rates by 6%.”
  • Use the tool and analyze your “weak spots”: Take note of the pages users are visiting, and the ones they ignored.
